Systems Engineer Support

CONTRACT POSITION

Bethesda, MD

Job Duties

The LHNCBC requires the services of a Systems Engineer/Tech who will be responsible for the efficient daily operation, including maintenance and administration, of R&D systems and development environments. The position reports to the Chief, Communications Engineering Branch (CEB), and has the following duties:

·          Configure, install, integrate, upgrade, troubleshoot and maintain the hardware and software in:   

Workstations, laptops and servers based on Windows and Linux

High end grayscale/color scanners, printers, LCD monitors, LED displays, touchscreen displays

Network routers, switchers, wireless access points

Network performance measurement tools

Videoconferencing equipment in industry standard offerings (e.g., Polycom and Tandberg)

·          Build software distributions for the Windows/Linux operating system environment.

·          Assist users in the Windows/Linux operating systems environment.

·          Administer user accounts.

·          Maintain system security profiles; perform system security audits, and remediate system security issues.

·          Troubleshoot, document, and resolve technical problems in a timely manner.

·          Develop shell script programming for systems administration as necessary.

·      Develop project plans and status reports for senior management.

·          Coordinate and/or modify project requirements to accommodate existing and projected computer capacity.

·          Evaluate, test and validate new releases and variations of system configurations

·          Analyze and tune Windows and Linux servers for performance and efficient operations

·          Maintain a high level of optimization on an ongoing basis

·          Develop and implement system monitoring procedures; monitor system logs.

·          Provide support in new system procurement, data backup, and patch management.

 

Required Skills and Experience

·          B.S degree in Engineering, Computer Science or related technical discipline, or at least five (5) years of relevant experience.

·          Thorough demonstrated knowledge of Linux/Windows server administration capabilities.

·          Experience and knowledge of hardware and software in an R&D environment.

·          Demonstrated expertise in Client hardware.

·          Experience in creating, tuning, maintaining virtual machines (e.g.,VMware)

·          Proficiency in NFS and MS Active Directory environments.

·          Experience in LAN, WAN, and TCP/IP environments.

·          Experience in administering systems in a networked environment.

·          Experience in Network performance measurement tools.

 

Desirable Skills and Experience

·          Mac OS X, RedHat Linux, Solaris operating system

·          Web site development and management (e.g., IIS administration)

·          Windows system security.

·          Windows shell scripts, Perl/php.

·          SAN, NAS storage solutions (e.g., NetApp)

·          High end grayscale/color scanners

·          Configuring, installing, troubleshooting, and maintaining any of the following Wireless technologies (3G, Bluetooth, CDMA, GSM, Wi-Fi, GPS, IrDA, GPRS, BREW, RFID, WAP, Amateur radio etc.)

·          Network switches

·          Networked printers

·          LCD monitors; single and multi-touchscreen displays

·          LED display panels

·          Videoconferencing equipment in industry standard offerings (e.g., Polycom)

·          Ongoing or past (volunteer or professional) experience in disaster and emergency

management response (Firefighter, emergency medical technician etc.)
